The Mets looked bad and lost in the biggest game they’ve played thus far in 2024.
The Mets opened their three-game series in Atlanta with an absolute dud, as they lost 5-1 and never really looked to have a chance of winning the game. That’s not ideal, of course, as they came into the series needing two wins in three games to clinch a playoff spot by way of securing a three-game lead and the tiebreaker over the Braves.
Luis Severino wasn’t good, as he gave up four runs in four innings of work. The Mets’ bullpen mostly fared well after that, giving up just a run in four innings of work, but it didn’t really matter.
The Mets’ offense was lifeless all night, as Spencer Schwellenbach shut them down until Mark Vientos nicked him for a solo home run in the seventh inning. To no one’s surprise, the Mets didn’t score against the Braves’ bullpen, either.
Given the forecast in Atlanta, it’s highly unlikely that the series is played in full over the next two days. That could be a good thing for the Mets, as their best path to making the playoffs might be one that sees them beat out the Diamondbacks—over whom they already have the tiebreaker—for one of the Wild Card spots.
