The Mets’ offense did its best Houdini impression and disappeared.
The Mets’ offense put in a Tom Glavine-like performance and didn’t show up with their season hanging by a thread in the team’s 6-0 loss to the Brewers.
For the third game in a row this looked very much like a team pressing which led to their third straight loss. As much as this team looked great against the Phillies with their confidence riding high this is now a team that is self-defeating and repeating the failings of all the doomed September teams that came before them.
José Quintana got the start and looked very good. He did much better than both Luis Severino and Sean Manaea before him but he couldn’t keep the Brewers off the board. He loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth and gave up a hit to Milwaukee’s eighth hitter Joey Ortiz that scored two. His night was over with one out in the fifth after he gave up a leadoff double and bunt. He struck out nine and walked two. He looked good for the most part and put in a solid pitching performance but it honestly did not matter since the offense could not get it together.
The Mets did manage to get runners in scoring position but left them stranded. Harrison Bader was the big culprit when he struck out for the third out with Pete Alonso on second to end the second inning and when he lined out in the fifth with one out and Marte on third.
From there the offense did not bothering put up much of a fight even though the sun is starting to set on their playoff hopes. Whatever hope remained after getting down 2-0, left the building when Reed Garrett and Danny Young made it 6-0 in the eighth.
While the bullpen epically imploded to put the game out of reach, this game was on the offense. Two runs were already Everest given the way this team is playing. After Marte’s double in the fifth they did not get another baserunner until one out in the ninth when Jose Iglesias walked. When all was said and done they could muster only two hits and they struck out eleven times. They aren’t out of it but they made it harder on themselves, and if they continue to play like this in their remaining games they will be sitting home in October.
