The Mets didn’t have their best night, and they’ll try to bounce back tomorrow.
It just wasn’t the Mets’ night. Kodai Senga couldn’t throw strikes early, the Dodgers scored a bunch, the Mets’ offense was sluggish at best, and the Mets lost the opener of the NLCS.
Senga gave up two runs in a very shaky bottom of the first, but he was sent back out there for the second inning gave up a third run before the Mets went to the bullpen. In total, Senga didn’t strike out anyone, walked four, and gave up three runs while recording just four outs. He looked as bad in this outing as he looked good in appearance against the Phillies in the NLDS.
Reed Garrett took over for Senga and went one-and-one-third innings with a pair of strikeouts and didn’t allow any runs. Unfortunately, David Peterson took over from there and didn’t pitch particularly well, either.
A big part of what got the Mets to this NLCS, Peterson gave up three runs—two of them earned—in two-and-one-third innings of work. With that, the Mets were down 6-0.
From there, Danny Young threw one-and-one-third innings without allowing a run. José Buttó didn’t follow suit, unfortunately, as he gave up three runs—two earned—in one-and-two thirds innings of work.
But hey, one loss is one loss, especially in a seven-game series. If the Mets can win Game 2 and return to Queens with the series tied, they’d be in a pretty good spot.
