Brandon Sproat, Jett Williams, and three others made BP’s annual list.
Baseball Prospectus released their 2025 Top-101 this morning, with five Mets prospects featuring on the list; Brandon Sproat at 39, Jett Williams at 48, Caron Benge at 71, Nolan McLean at 74, and Jonah Tong at 75.
The inclusion of Sproat and Williams is hardly surprising, as both featured on BP’s midseason top-50 in 2024. Sproat had something of a breakout season, establishing himself as one of the better right-handed pitching prospects in baseball. Jett, by contrast, had a down year plagued by injuries, but he retains an attractive base of skills that makes him an exciting-if-not-quite-elite prospect.
Benge, McLean, and Tong are all new entrants. Benge, the Mets’ first-round pick in 2024, was an intriguing prospect pre-draft, flashing offensive skills as well as inconsistent and at times problematic swing mechanics. It became obvious post-draft that he had already corrected most of those problems, and he’s a potential plus-hit plus-power center fielder. McLean and Tong come from very different player demographics, started the year in different places, and have very disparate skillsets, but are ultimately both good representations of the Mets’ vastly improved pitching development apparatus. Both could potentially debut in 2025.
According to BP’s Jarrett Seidler, Jesus Baez was the Mets’ prospect who was closest to making the list; he both received consideration and is one of the more likely breakout candidates who could make the list at midseason or next season. Ryan Clifford and Luisangel Acuña also received some level of consideration. Conversely, Drew Gilbert was left off the list and was not considered particularly close after a disastrous and injury-filled 2024; he’ll need a significant bounce-back in 2025 to rebuild his value.
