The Mets dropped a matinee to the Red Birds.
The Mets and the Cardinals met for the first (but certainly not last) time this spring at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium in Jupiter.
- Blade Tidwell, our #16 Mets prospect for 2025, started for the Mets and gave up three runs, including a home run to Luken Baker, in two innings of work. Tidwell struck out one and walked one, alongside the four hits given up.
- Old friend Steven Matz started for the Cardinals and, aside from issuing a walk to Pete Alonso, was perfect over two innings.
- The first New York runs came in the third with Pete Alonso doubling in Rafael Ortega and Juan Soto to start the scoring. In the fourth, José Azocar homered to left center with no one on to temporarily tie the game. After falling behind again, in the seventh backup catcher Chris Williams hit a solo moonshot over the buses behind the left field wall.
- The Mets got scoreless innings from José Buttó, Huascar Brazobán, and Dom Hamel, who collectively gave up one hit and struck out three over their three innings of work.
- Less impressive were the trio of relievers who followed, with Joander Suarez, Douglas Orellana, and Eduardo Herrera each giving up runs, although Orellana struck out three to go along with his solo home run surrendered to Jose Barrero.
