The radio voice of the Mets made one of the best calls of his outstanding broadcasting career.
“He did it! He did it!” boasted Howie Rose, channeling the energy of his legendary “Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!” call during the Rangers’ Stanley Cup run in 1994.
Rose’s call of—as he put it—”the most memorable home run of his career” is worth watching over and over and over. Here it is.
Baseball fans are stripped of the joy of listening to their local television broadcasters in the postseason, as the league shifts everything to national networks. And in the case of Mets fans, missing out on Gary, Keith, Ron, and Steve makes that transition a massive downgrade.
But the fact that Rose still calls these games on the radio makes for a silver lining, as the Mets just so happen to have two of the best play-by-play people in the business. Syncing Howie’s call with the national broadcast video feed is the way to go when watching the Mets in the playoffs, and last night, it paid off mightily.
And last but not least, here’s video of Howie’s call getting played and the players celebrating it with him on the team’s flight.
