The news comes as no surprise given Manaea’s very good 2024 season.
The Mets have extended a qualifying offer to left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea, as expected, per Jon Heyman. This year, the offers—which are one-year contracts–are worth $21.05 million.
Coming off a so-so year with the Giants in 2023, Manaea signed a two-year deal with the Mets that stipulated that the second year was a player option, which he unsurprisingly declined following the season. In 181.2 innings in the regular season, Manaea had a 3.47 ERA and a 3.83 FIP. He was particularly effective after tweaking his delivery during the season and finished particularly strong, posting a 3.09 ERA over the course of his final 75.2 innings of the season.
Playoff success was a bit more elusive for Manaea, as he seemingly ran out of gas as the Mets’ playoff run kept going. He threw 19.0 innings in total in the postseason with a 4.74 ERA.
If Manaea were to accept the deal, which he presumably won’t, the 33-year-old would be great to have in the Mets’ rotation in 2025. And of course, there’s nothing preventing the Mets and Manaea from talking about a contract in the likely event that he declines the QO.
