According to Pat Ragazzo, the New York Mets are discussing pursuing the Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. Mountcastle would be a suitable fit to take over Pete Alonso if he doesn’t resign with the Mets. Last season, he sported a .271 batting average along with 13 home runs, 63 RBI, and 128 hits. As the Alonso sweepstakes continue and while he remains on the market, the reality of him signing elsewhere is becoming more apparent. The Mets have also considered other options at first base with Joey Meneses, Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, and Jared Young. Mountcastle would provide the Mets with many crafty elements as a veteran, both through offense and defense. Mountcastle is 27 years old and made his MLB debut in 2020.
In addition to Tigers’ Spencer Torkelson, the Mets have also discussed a potential trade for Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle as a possible replacement option for Pete Alonso, sources tell Mets On SI.

Mets Linked to Orioles Ryan Mountcastle
Why Mountcastle Fits With the Mets
Mountcastle would be a beneficial addition to the Mets as he has the potential to amplify his power with some adjustments. He also provides clutch defense and was a finalist for the Gold Glove award for first base in 2023 and 2024. Mountcastle also has experience playing in left field, so if he needed to be placed in the outfield, the Mets would have options. The Mets have also been connected to the Detroit Tigers Spencer Torkelson, but Mountcastle offers more versatility and experience. Mountcastle also has experience playing shortstop and started his career at shortstop.
Also, looking at his defense he has refined areas such as defensive runs saved and fielding runs above average. Mountcastle also earned AL Rookie of the Month in June of 2021. Compared to other AL rookies in 2021 he prospered in several areas. For example, batting average, slugging, on-base plus slugging, home runs, and extra-base hits. In 2021, Mountcastle also stood on top by recording an extensive hitting streak (13 games) by an Orioles player. All these aspects make him a worthy replacement for Alonso.
