The New York Mets are among several teams expressing interest in right-hander Walker Buehler, a prized target on the rotation market, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Buehler, a longtime Los Angeles Dodger, offers significant upside on a short-term deal. The Mets’ rotation is facing significant turnover, with Sean Manaea, Luis Severino and Jose Quintana all free agents. Additionally, top pitching prospect will miss most or all of the 2025 season after undergoing UCL surgery. While the Mets addressed some of their pitching needs with the recent signing of Frankie Montas, further reinforcements are necessary.
Buehler, who has drawn interest from the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and Athletics, could be a key addition to the Mets rotation.
Mets Linked to Walker Buehler
Buehler, 30, was once one of the National League’s standout young pitchers, but injuries have hindered his performance. He pitched 65 innings in 2022 and missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery. In 2024, his performance was not up to par with previous seasons, posting a 5.83 ERA over 75 1/3 innings, along with the worst rate statistics of his career. His strikeout rate fell to 18.6 percent, while his walk rate increased to 8.1 percent—both below his career averages of 27.3 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively. Additionally, his 8.2 percent swinging strike rate ranked 190th out of 204 pitchers who threw 70 innings or more during the season.
The dismal season turned into a highlight for Buehler, who delivered some of the best moments of his career during the World Series. He pitched five shutout innings in the Dodgers’ 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 3. This was followed by a strong relief appearance in which he secured the save with a scoreless ninth inning in Game 5, throwing the final pitch to clinch the Dodgers’ eighth World Series title. Along with his four innings of shutout pitching against the Mets in the National League Championship Series, these performances helped Buehler end his season on a high note.
David Stearns’ Preference for Short-Term Deals
Buehler’s strong World Series performances served as a highlight in an otherwise challenging season. As he enters free agency, his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations could make him an attractive addition to contending teams. The Mets, in particular, are among the teams expressing interest in Buehler, aligning with president of baseball operations David Stearns’ preference for shorter-term deals.
Buehler’s potential signing with the Mets aligns with president of baseball operations David Stearns’ preference for shorter-term deals. Stearns has historically avoided long-term commitments, but the Mets’ increased spending capacity may change this approach. The Mets have around $150 million to spend, with some of that earmarked for a potential Juan Soto signing.
Buehler’s deal could be influenced by his personal preference, with options including one-year arrangements or multi-year deals with opt-out opportunities.
