The New York Mets endured a tough start to the season with a 0-5 record but managed to stage an impressive comeback to secure a spot in the National League Wild Card. Their thrilling doubleheader victory over the Atlanta Braves included multiple lead changes, with the Mets initially appearing to be at a disadvantage before rallying to secure their spot in October baseball.

Mets Stun Braves with Dramatic Comeback to Clinch Postseason Spot
With the lead changing hands twice in the eighth on 10 runs scored, Francisco Lindor was the hero in the ninth. Lindor launched a two-run, go-ahead home run that proved to be the difference maker for the Mets. After right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach posted seven strong innings, the Mets sucked the life out of Truist Park with a six-run eighth to take a 6-3 lead. All six runs came on hits from Tyrone Taylor, Starling Marte, Lindor and Jose Iglesias before Brandon Nimmo hit a 405-foot two-run homer to give the Mets life.
Second baseman Ozzie Albies and the Braves marched their way through a four-run inning of their own. It included a bases-clearing double from Albies off Mets closer Edwin Diaz to retake the lead. But Lindor’s heroics are one of the reasons why he has been one of the best players this season.

With the Mets clinching, there’s still one game left to be played. The Braves need a win of their own to clinch their ticket. That would come at the expense of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who are on the outside looking in due to tiebreakers. New York will either play the San Diego Padres if they sweep or visit the Milwaukee Brewers if they lose the second game of the doubleheader.
