Who could have possibly seen this coming?
The inevitable has happened, as the second game of a crucial series between the Mets and Braves has officially been rained out. With even more rain on the way in Atlanta tomorrow thanks to Hurricane Helene, the final game of series has been be postponed, too.
The plan—at least for now—is that the Mets and Braves will play a doubleheader on Monday, a ridiculously cumbersome obligation that could have and should have been avoided given the blatantly obvious forecast that showed outdoor baseball wouldn’t be possible in Atlanta for both of these games.
Major League Baseball chose not to intervene in the scheduling nightmare that’s been created by the postponed games, as Joel Sherman reported. Rather than prioritizing playing the series in full and on schedule elsewhere, the league deferred to the Braves’ desire to make money—per Sherman’s report.
With that, the Mets, the Braves, and perhaps the league will be hoping to see the National League Wild Card wrapped up over the weekend. The Mets are scheduled to begin a three-game series against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Friday night—assuming they can make it out of Atlanta before the hurricane hits. And the Braves are scheduled to host the Royals for three games beginning that night—assuming Kansas City can get into town by then.
The Diamondbacks, meanwhile, are set to play their series finale against the Giants tonight. They have an off day on Thursday before playing a three-game series against the Padres over the weekend. Both the Mets and the Braves have tiebreakers over Arizona should it come down to that.
