Time is running out for first baseman Pete Alonso and the New York Mets, but a reunion is still possible. Both sides remain in contract talks, but according to SNY’s Andy Martino, the Mets are “holding the line on both the length and dollars of their short-term offer, which includes an opt-out after the first year.”
If nothing can be agreed upon, the Mets will have to pivot to find offense elsewhere. Martino reports that re-signing outfielder Jesse Winker is “very possible” while adding a free agent like Anthony Santander “seems less unlikely.”
To that end, Martino reports that the Mets have spoken with the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason about first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Mets Checked in with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The Mets could make a huge splash in the trade market for Guerrero. Although the discussions were mostly “checking in,” according to Martino who views a Mets/Guerrero “fit remains in the realm of fantasy baseball.”
Sources did inform Martino that the Blue Jays are still weighing whether to extend the 25-year-old slugger. Guererro reportedly gave Toronto a deadline of the first day of spring training to have a deal completed. In recent discussions, Guerrero and the Blue Jays are $100 million, with the former seeking at least a $450 million extension.
Guerrero, entering the final season of his contract, is slated to become a free agent next winter. If the Blue Jays don’t sign him long-term, there’ll be no shortage of Guerrero/Mets rumors throughout the season.
The Mets Likely Alternative
Martino previously reported that the Mets’ alternative to Alonso is to “emphasize youth and versatility on the infield in 2025.” In that case, they’ll have to add to the offense elsewhere.
Mark Vientos, Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña, Ronny Mauricio, and a few others are all versatile players who have the potential to contribute at various infield positions for the team. Among this talented group, scouting director Martino identifies Vientos as the most promising candidate to take on a substantial role at first base. His skill set and adaptability make him an attractive option for this position. However, the Mets organization is taking a more flexible approach and prefers not to lock in any single player to a specific position at this stage.
This strategy allows them to explore different combinations and optimize their lineup based on performance and matchups throughout the season.
