A three-year varsity letterman at Zionsville High School in Zionsville, Indiana, Nate Dohm established himself as one of the best pitchers in Indiana and one of the best prospects in the state, period. In his senior season, he posted a miniscule 0.98 ERA in 42.0 innings with 19 hits allowed, 14 walks, and 90 strikeouts. He went undrafted in the 2021 MLB Draft and attended Ball State University that fall, a school he decided on because it was a fairly local and he and his family considered it a good developer of pitching talent.
He appeared in 15 games for the Cardinals in his freshman year, starting 3 games, and posted a 5.71 ERA in 41.0 innings, allowing 32 hits, walking 26, and striking out 56. He played a bit for the Hamilton Joes of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League that summer but did not return to Ball State in the fall. He instead entered the transfer portal and transferred to Mississippi State University; the right-hander and his family did not go through any bad experiences at Ball State, but Dohm had committed to the school while COVID-19 was still causing intermittent lockdowns and problems and felt that, with a year of college baseball under his belt, in order for his budding career to continue, it would have to be elsewhere, at a college that could do more for him.
The 20-year-old appeared in 17 games for the Bulldogs in 2023, starting two games. He posted a 4.07 ERA on the year, pitching 42.0 innings and allowing 42 hits, walking 12, and striking out 49. He led the rebuilding Mississippi State pitching staff with six wins and led the team in saves with two. Head coach Chris Lemonis transitioned the right-hander into the MSU starting rotation for the 2024 season and the move proved a major boon to Dohm, who began experiencing major helium due to early success. In his first four starts, he posted a 1.50 ERA in 24.0 innings with 21 hits allowed, 4 walks, and 32 strikeouts. On his April 7 start against the University of Georgia, he was removed from the game after recorded only a single out due to a forearm strain. He rested for a month and returned to the mound in mid-May, and while he was still effective, the pain in his forearm remained and so he ended his season prematurely. All in all, the right-hander appeared in 8 games, starting 6, and posted a 1.23 ERA in 29.1 innings, allowing 23 hits, walking 4, and striking out 37. The Mets selected Dohm with their third-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft and signed him for $797,500, a bit below the MLB-assigned slot value for 82nd overall pick, $934,800. He was assigned to the FCL Mets in early August as a roster formality, but did not pitch for them.
Dohm stands 6’4” and weighs 210 pounds, a sturdy, durable frame for pitching. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, which helps create induced vertical break on his fastball. The pitch sits in the mid-90s and reportedly tops out as high as 98 MPH and is especially effective up in the zone thanks to its rising life. He complements the pitch with a mid-80s slider, a high-70s curveball, and a mid-to-high-80s changeup. His slider is the best of his secondary pitchers, featuring sharp, two-plane gyroscopic break that tunnels well with his fastball. His curveball is considered an average-to-above-average offering as well, featuring 11-5 break. His changeup is a below-average offering currently, lacking much fade and tumble; he added the pitch to his repertoire only recently and its use was mainly limited to left-handed pitchers.
In his freshman season at Ball State, the right-hander struggled to throw strikes, posting a 14.8% BB% in 41.0 innings. Since transferring to Mississippi State University, he posted a 6.5% rate in 42.0 innings in 2023 and a 3.5% rate in 29.1 innings. The right-hander keeps the ball in the strike zone, and posted one of the highest strike percentages in the NCAA in 2024, his 72.0% trailing only Northeastern’s Will Jones (74.3%), South Carolina’s Garrett Gainey (72.8%), and Wake Forests’s Cole Roland (72.1%).
In a vacuum, his pitches miss bats and his arsenal is wide enough to start games, but Dohm has never pitched more than 42.0 innings. Coupled with the major red flag in his 2024 injury, the right-hander’s future role in the organization is clouded.
