A three sport star who played football, basketball, and baseball at Liberty North High School in Liberty, Missouri, Trey Snyder stood out in high school and exhibition games and was considered by some scouts and evaluators to be the best prep prospect in the very crowded field in the state of Missouri. After hitting .391 with 7 home runs and 22 stolen bases this past spring in his senior season, he was named Missouri Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year, giving Liberty North High School three consecutive winners, as former alumni Tate McGuire was the 2022-2023 recipient and Karson Milbrandt was the recipient in 2021-2022. He had a commitment to the University of Tennessee but forwent it after the Mets drafted him with their 5th round selection in the 2024 MLB Draft and signed him for $1,322,500, well-above the MLB-recommended slot value for the 144th overall pick, $476,200. He was assigned to the St. Lucie Mets at the end of August and suited up for 6 games with them, going 4-22 with a stolen base, four walks, and six strikeouts.
The right-hander stands square at the plate, holding his hands at eye level and angling his bat at 2:00. He swings with a slight leg lift timing mechanism and the ball explodes off his bat. He currently shows more line drive power than home run power, but the in-game power will come as he continues to fill in and optimizes his swing mechanics and swing path. During exhibition games in high school, he has recorded numerous 100+ MPH exit velocities, but in his professional cup of coffee in 2024, he averaged 80.6 MPH, with his high water mark a groundball that was measured 98.6 MPH off the bat. Speaking of ground balls, Snyder did not hit a single ball in the air in his limited 2024 performance, with a range of launch angles from 16 degrees to -50, and pulled more than half of he balls he made contact with. While this is almost certainly small sample size static, Snyder is an aggressive, free swinger and will need to be more selective against more advanced pitching to be effective.
Defensively, Snyder shows quick reactions off the bat, a dynamic first step, a smooth glove, soft hands, a quick transfer, and a strong, accurate arm that has been measured as high as 93 MPH. He put on muscle and weight during his high school years and some scouts and evaluators believe that he will continue doing so and get too physical for shortstop, forcing him to move over to either second or third base.
