On September 1st, all MLB rosters will be allowed to call up one more position player and one more pitcher. The New York Mets will likely massively benefit from this since there are pitchers and prospects that the Mets could currently use. The Mets also would love to see what certain players can do for future reference.
Top Mets Players Worthy Of Call-Up When Roster Expand
Call-Up: Luisangel Acuna
Primarily famous for being the brother of Ronald Acuna Jr., Luisangel Acuña deserves to be called up for different reasons. Acuna does not possess the power or batting average of his brother but possesses the speed. Luisangel Acuna would not be a hefty bat on the team. However, he would become a big threat on the bases, much like Pete-Crow Armstrong of the Cubs. His ability to steal bases and get on base is the best thing about him; he could become a runs machine. The fact that his brother is 6 feet tall and he is 5’8 may be the reason for the power difference. However, he might not be as powerful, but he is as fast.
The Mets could use some speed on the bases, as they consistently use other older players such as Starling Marte, Tyrone Taylor, and Jose Iglesias. He would become somebody to use to their advantage late in games and when they needed an extra run. Another good thing about Acuna is the fact that he can hit for average, something that, again, the Mets could use. Acuna only has 6 home runs and a .257 average this season, but last season, he 9 home runs with a .294 average. Last season was better for Acuna average-wise, and the Mets could use a player with a high average.
Call-Up: Brandon Sproat
The Mets need a fireball pitcher who could shut a team down late in games. Brandon Sproat will not likely start a game for New York this season, regardless of Paul Blackburn’s injury and the unreliability of Joey Lucchesi and Tylor Megill. However, Sproat can be a deadly reliever for a team that does not have one pitcher other than Edwin Diaz, who can throw triple digits. Even Diaz has not been able to reach those numbers often at all this season.
Sproat becoming a closer or a pitcher to use in late innings would be very useful for a team that lacks a powerful bullpen. The Met’s power lies in their offense and weak bullpen. Calling up Shintaro Fujinami or other relievers may also be a choice for the Mets. However, the Mets should allow Sproat a chance to prove himself this season. The Mets hope to use Sproat as a starter in the future. However, this season, the rotation won’t likely see Sproat and the Mets have a weaker bullpen than they do a bullpen.
Overall, the Mets should use the upcoming roster expansion to their advantage. Using some speed and adding some averages would be helpful. But they could also use a better bullpen, whether it is Brandon Sproat or not.
