Megill struck out six and walked one in five innings.
Tylor Megill’s first start of the 2025 season went very well last night in Houston, as he gave up just one run in five innings, struck out six, and walked one in the Mets’ 3-1 win. Coming off a strong finish to his regular season last year, it was exactly the kind of start you’d like to see from him.
In his start, Megill threw five pitches, per Statcast, and here’s how many times he threw each one.
- Four-seam fastball: 39
- Sinker: 18
- Slider: 16
- Curveball: 3
- Changeup: 1
He finished four of his six strikeouts with the slider, which means a whopping 25 percent of his sliders thrown were put-away pitches. And his fastball topped out at 98.3 miles per hour and averaged 96.4 miles per hour in the outing. It’s just one start and far too soon to jump to any conclusions, but if Megill were to continue throwing his fastball that hard, it would be an increase from his average of 95.7 miles per hour in 2024 and 94.9 miles per hour in 2023.
And here’s a visual breakdown of all of the pitches Megill threw in his successful start.
