New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism on Monday that left-hander Nestor Cortes will join the team’s World Series roster. According to Boone, Cortes’ chances are “good” contingent upon a successful live batting practice session on Tuesday. If Cortes emerges unscathed, he’s likely to assume a relief role, although manager Aaron Boone hasn’t made an official commitment. Cortes has been sidelined since late September due to a left flexor strain.
Boone says there’s a “good chance” Nestor Cortes will be on the Yankees’ World Series roster. He’s set to throw live again tomorrow and if he gets through that, could get the all clear.

Nestor Cortes Closing in on World Series Roster Spot
Cortes, 29, pitched a career-high 174 1/3 innings in the majors this season. He started a career-best 30 games in 31 appearances and posted a 3.77 ERA while striking out 22.8% of his opponents to a strong 5.5% walk rate. While the Yankees were playing their way to the American League pennant, Cortes resumed playing catch on October 6. That also includes a bullpen session and 10-15 pitches to hitters in live batting practice. In the absence of Cortes, the Yankees set a four-man rotation for the postseason including Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt and Carlos Rodón.
Even if Boone deploys Cortes in a bullpen role, his experience in that capacity would serve him well. Ground ball specialist Tim Hill is the Yankees’ only reliable left-handed reliever. Adding Cortes would provide a significant boost, given his impressive ability to neutralize left-handed hitters. This season, Cortes fanned 27.5% of lefties he faced, offering a valuable swing-and-miss option for high-leverage situations.
Adding Cortes to the bullpen would enhance the Yankees’ chances against the Dodgers in the World Series. His ability to challenge left-handers is crucial in matchups against the Dodgers’ powerful lefty bats.
