We are approaching the mid-August mark as the quest for a pennant race grows thicker for certain teams. The New York Yankees are right at the top of the list for prospective postseason clubs. A postseason appearance is expected from the Yankees. The remainder of the schedule is filled with potential postseason matchups.
Remainder Of Yankees Schedule Vital To Postseason Run
At the moment, the Yankees sit tangled in first place in the American League East with the Baltimore Orioles. Months ago, New York ran with the East until a short slide that minimized their gap from the top of the empire. Both teams sit at 73 wins and 50 losses.
The remainder of the Yankees regular season will be extremely meaningful. The significance of the remaining opponents pertains to their race for not only the division title but possible postseason matchups, including the wild card.
The Yankees Postseason Seating Could Depend On Games Scheduled For September 24th-26th
As expected, the Bronx Bombers will meet with their AL East dance partner one last time. September 24th is game one of a three game set against the Baltimore Orioles. These games will go head-to-head in a fight for the division.
Results from this series can directly affect the outcome of playoff scenarios for both clubs. In addition, this could be some early tension building as there is a slight chance a tiebreaker could be possible for the division win.
August Matchups Could Be A Preview To The American League Divisional Series
The Yankees are scheduled to play the Cleveland Guardians next week for three games. The Guardians sit at 72 wins in the AL Central, a much lighter division with regards to competition.
Depending on final records and standings, the Yankees could see the Guardians in two scenarios. The first scenario being the Yankees win the AL East and advance to the American League Division Series against Cleveland.
The same scenario would play if New York went the longer route through a wild card spot. If they advance through the wild card into round one of the postseason, Cleveland could very well be the next stop.
The Yankees are tentatively scheduled to face Matthew Boyd, Alex Cobb, and Gavin Williams. This will provide a good look at the starting rotation.
Three Potential Wild Card Teams Are On The Yankees Schedule In September
September baseball is meaningful for any team within the vicinity of a wild card spot. The Yankees get three of them, the Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners. The Royals currently sit in the third wild card spot while the Red Sox and Mariners look from the outside in. Boston is 2.5 games behind the fourth wild card spot. They’re 4-6 in their last 10 games.
The Mariners are sneaking right under the Sox in the fifth spot, behind 3.5 games. All three of these teams are on a mission to win games as each match-up is destiny binding. These clubs will play New York from a postseason approach.
Each victory counts this time of year, and the Yankees are as much in the question of the wild card as they are in the divisional race. The remainder of the schedule holds significant weight to the outcome of the season; it could determine postseason fate.
