The New York Yankees pursuit of Cody Bellinger has reached a stalemate. As a result, the team has shifted its focus to the first-base market. Several high-profile free agents are available, and the Yankees are exploring their options.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the team is negotiating with four top free-agent first basemen: Pete Alonso, Christian Walker, Carlos Santana, and Paul Goldschmidt. Each of these players comes with a different price point. Alonso is the youngest at 30, while Walker will turn 34 in March. Goldschmidt is 37, and Santana will be 39 in April. Among these options, signing Walker makes the most sense for the Yankees. They need more offensive production from the first base position, and Walker can provide both power and defensive capability.
Christian Walker Emerges as Yankees Target
Among these options, Walker stands out as a prime target for the Yankees. At 33, Walker offers a blend of power, defensive capability, and affordability. Last season, he slashed .256/.335/.468 with 26 home runs and 84 RBI. Over the past three years, Walker has consistently produced a .250/.332/.481 slash line.
Walker’s defensive prowess is equally impressive. A three-time National League Gold Glove winner at first base, Walker led NL first basemen with 13 outs above average. His defensive skills would be a valuable asset to the Yankees.
In contrast, Santana and Goldschmidt might not be the best fit for the Yankees. Santana, a switch-hitter with excellent defensive skills, is 38 and has seen a decline in power since his All-Star season in 2019. Goldschmidt, meanwhile, experienced a downturn in 2023, setting career lows in on-base percentage (.302) and slugging (.302).
Alonso is also an option, but his age and potential price point might make him less appealing to the Yankees. As the team weighs its options, Walker’s well-rounded skillset and affordability make him an attractive target.
