Year by year, teams will improve on both sides of the organization: the professional and farm systems. The New York Yankees were once at the top of the rankings for their farm system. In 2025, the state of this has slightly diminished.
The Yankees were on a market hunt this offseason, gunning to cement some on-field cavities. The club’s decisions seem to be somewhat working out in their favor so far, with healthy performances all around.
In early March 2025, MLB.com released its updated farm system rankings, and the Yankees did not place well. MLB writers Jonathan Mayo, Jim Callis, and Sam Dykstra collaborated to give each club their respective ranks.
The list started off accurately with the Detroit Tigers in the first spot. Endless scrolling allowed you to find the Yankees near the bottom, being ranked the 24th farm system of the 30 MLB clubs in 2025.
A Further Dive into the Yankees Farm System
The Bronx Bombers are a start low, go high on the farm system rankings. The 2023 preseason ranking had them 13th of 30 teams, meanwhile midseason ranked 21. The 2024 rankings displayed 11th place preseason and 18th mid-season.
The Yankees have only one prospect on MLB’s top 100 list, which is Jasson Dominguez, who’s ranked 21st of 100. Dominguez is also on the active roster with the big club. The club has promoted and is fully utilizing previous prospective pieces.
Aside from Dominguez, the Yankees rely heavily on starting pitcher Luis Gil, who was a part of the higher-ranking farm system. Gil took the AL Rookie of the Year in 2024 and occupies a reliable spot in the rotation.
Austin Wells is also a major part of the offense and defense in the Bronx, being the first-string catcher and a reliable left-handed bat. Right-handed pitcher Will Warren also plays a key role in the Yankees’ bullpen and holds the 5th-ranked prospect spot of the Yankees’ top 30 prospects.
Clayton Beeter is ranked 22nd on the list, and Yoendrys Gomez is ranked 25th. Currently, both of these arms occupy bullpen roles in the majors.
The Make-Up
The Yankees’ top 30 prospects list is made up of 18 pitchers, five outfielders, and seven infielders. Eight players are estimated to reach the big leagues this year, while three are protected on the team’s 40-man roster.
Undoubtedly, the Yankees are packed with arms in the farm system. This is thanks to the draft and the international signing period. Pitchers are promoted quickly and often out of the minors.
The ranking for New York reflects the lack of big bats in the minors, and the short production those bats are having. Spencer Jones is off to a slow start, batting .273. Roderick Arias has no hits within 12 at-bats to start the season.
To recuperate ratings, the Yankees’ big sticks will need to produce at a consistent rate. The club will also need a big pickup in this year’s first round of the draft. A big bat should be the target. The 2025 draft will be a healthy replenishment to the Yankees grassroots.
