Luis Gil Shut Down for At Least Six Weeks with Lat Strain
After a bullpen session last week, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reported that Gil was dealing with shoulder discomfort, causing him to undergo an MRI. While the MRI showed a high-grade strain, the right-handed pitcher will undergo further testing as the team looks to provide a timetable for his return. This is the second major arm injury of Gil’s career after he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022.
It’s a difficult injury for both Gil and the Yankees, as the reigning American League Rookie of the Year looked to slot into the top of the Yankees rotation in his second big league season. In 2024, Gil pitched to a 3.50 ERA in 151 1/3 innings, acting as the team’s ace while Gerrit Cole was out with an elbow injury until mid-June. Gil beat out Yankees teammate Austin Wells and Colton Cowser of the Baltimore Orioles to win the AL Rookie of the Year award, becoming the first Yankee to win it since Aaron Judge in 2017.
With Gil seemingly out until May or June, the Yankees will most likely look internally to fill his spot in the rotation. Marcus Stroman, who the Yankees spent most of this offseason trying to trade, should grab the final rotation spot, barring an injury or last-second deal. If not Stroman, Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco would seemingly be in line for the spot. Even without Gil, the Yankees should still have one of the top starting rotations in baseball, headlined by Cole and newcomer Max Fried.
