Carmelo Anthony on not Accepting a Knicks Role: “We sat down and had a real conversation. ‘Listen, here’s a spot. You can be on the team tomorrow, but this is the spot.’ I said, ‘Nah, nah, I can’t.’ The not knowing of when you’re going to play and not play—I’d rather not go through that. I’mma bow out gracefully. I just had a hell of a year, you know what I mean, in LA in my role. Basketball ain’t the issue. I can’t do that. That’s a hell of a decline. When I look at it overall, the overall big picture, that’s a hell of a decline. So I just had to stand on that. No disrespect, but I can’t accept that.”

One-time Knicks in our GOAT list:
36. Patrick Ewing
40. Jason Kidd
50. Carmelo Anthony
53. Bob McAdoo
59. Walt Frazier
61. Willis Reed
74. Bernard King
75. Earl Monroe
76. Tracy McGrady
Pretty underwhelming for a franchise that’s been around so long.

More on this storyline
Carmelo Anthony: “I want team ownership. I want sports ownership personally. So let’s get people together that we can go do that with. If you’re giving him [Bezos] the opportunity, give these others the opportunity. Give us opportunities to be involved in those tables and those conversations, especially the guys who are already searching or reaching to try to make those goals happen and get into sports ownership and team ownership. Let’s have real conversations to that point.” -via YouTube / August 27, 2024
Carmelo Anthony on returning to New York: “At that point, I’m like, you know what, my plan is playing out the way that I wrote it out, right? To come back to New York, finish it out in New York, have my year, play. It’s a good team. I still can play ball; I still can help the team out. It was just like the vision I had. Damn, you know, my goal was to always make it back here to finish it out here anyway. So that was my plan. I moved out the city, got the crib out there by, you know what I mean, I got the crib out in the county, so it was like, okay, this is going to happen. The energy is there; the conversations are there. It’s like, oh, like this is going to happen.” -via YouTube / August 27, 2024
Carmelo Anthony: “You mean to tell me three months later, four months later, I can’t do that same thing? But this is what bugs me out from a fan perspective, from a basketball perspective. At that time, if you look at that roster, exactly what the Knicks needed was perimeter shooting at a high percentage. What they needed, they needed perimeter shooting, period, and they needed vets. They needed somebody that was willing to come in and help those guys out and help Julius, you know what I’m saying? Which is why they went and got Taj. But Taj, in his situation, is cool with not playing 10 games, coming back and playing the 17th game, not playing another eight games. You know what I’m saying? Getting cut, coming back. Like, hell no, that’s not—I can’t do that.” -via YouTube / August 27, 2024
