Colin Cowherd isn’t against the idea of Dan Hurley leaving UConn for the NBA, he just doesn’t think the back-to-back champion should coach the Los Angeles Lakers.
On Friday afternoon, Cowherd suggested that Hurley should wait until the New York Knicks have an opening at head coach.
“I’m Dan Hurley — wife is from New Jersey. Wait until the Knicks job opens,” Cowherd wrote on X. “It will. It’s the NBA.”
Cowherd isn’t wrong about jobs constantly opening up in the NBA, but it’s not like Hurley is receiving an offer from the Hornets. At the end of the day, the Lakers have the biggest brand in the NBA.
And since Cowherd mentioned the Knicks, it’s worth noting that Tom Thibodeau did a wonderful job this season. The odds of him being replaced within the next year or two are fairly slim.
Hurley’s stock will never be higher than it is right now. He’s a 51-year-old coach who has taken UConn’s program to new heights.
Despite Cowherd’s suggestion, it seems like Hurley is more than willing to listen to what the Lakers have to say.
Hurley is meeting with Lakers owner Jeanie Buss and vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka this Friday. It’s too early to tell if a deal will get done by tonight.
