The Hawks fielded offers for Murray leading up to this past winter’s trade deadline but couldn’t find one worth executing. During that time, they spoke with the Knicks, league sources said, but the two sides never got close to an agreement. Part of Murray’s appeal to New York was his flippability; the Knicks could trade for Murray at the deadline, then include him in another deal for a star this summer or next season.

More on this storyline
Now, it remains unclear how the Hawks will be proceeding. But for NBA insider and analyst Bill Simmons, the answer has become more clear. Speaking on his eponymous podcast, Simmons revealed that a few of his sources have indicated that the Hawks, more likely than not, are going to move on from both Trae Young and Dejounte Murray this offseason. “The thing I keep hearing from people is that if it was an over of one on FanDuel, Trae and Murray get traded and the over’s one and you could bet under, push, or over, that some people seem to think both of those guys are getting traded is a thing I’ve heard,” Simmons said on the latest episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast. “From different people that don’t know each other, who know things, [they said that the Hawks are] just like, ‘You know what, we’ve got the number one pick, this didn’t work, we got to the Conference Finals that one time, let’s just try to blow this up.’” -via Clutch Points / June 11, 2024

Following the combine and pro day events for several agencies, there remains a belief around the league that Atlanta will break up the backcourt pairing of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray. Several executives who spoke with HoopsHype say they value Murray over Young due to his contract length and average annual salary. -via HoopsHype / May 28, 2024
