Tonight is opening night of the 2024-25 NBA season, one of the most anticipated ones for the New York Knicks in a long time.
After earning the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed and winning a playoff series for the second straight year in 2023-24, the Knicks traded for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns this offseason, an indication they are serious about contending. They’ll get a firsthand look at the team to beat tonight, starting the season in Boston against the NBA champion Celtics.
Knicks fans are understandably fired up, and one man named “Fred” made it clear his allegiance is with the orange and blue tonight ahead of even his own family.
Fred’s wife published the letter he left her earlier today on social media, where it has been going viral.
“Dear wife, Let me start this off by saying that I love you dearly,” the letter starts off. “You meant the world to me. However I owe it to myself as well as you to be completely honest with you. I have to come forward with my truth. I hate to do it this way but it’s now or never because what I’m about to say has to be said.”
That start sounds ominous, but Fred went on to tell his wife that since tonight is the Knicks’ season opener, he “will be watching the game” and from 7 p.m. ET (“when the pregame starts”) until the game ends will “not be a husband or father.”
“Y’all are on your own for a couple of hours. No I will not watch our shows with you. No I will not get you something sweet. I will not take the dog out. I will not get the kid in bed either,” Fred added. “I will sit on my couch, drink in hand and watch the game. This doesn’t mean I love you guys any less. It just means tonight is not about y’all. It’s about ruining the Boston Celtics’ ring ceremony.”
As a kicker, Fred said their son will be able to stay up past his bedtime, but only if he watches the game with him.
Pretty wild, but Fred’s wife handled the letter in stride, though she admitted to being stressed out by its opening paragraph.
The Celtics just hoisted their NBA-record 18th championship banner at TD Garden, and tip-off is just moments away on TNT.
Let the 2024-25 season commence.
