Well, here’s something we didn’t expect to say: Patrick Ewing is back with the New York Knicks.
Ewing, an 11-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year, played for the Knicks from 1985-2000. He averaged 22.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game during his time in New York, cementing himself as one of, if not the greatest player to suit up for the franchise. Despite his history with the Knicks, he’s been away from the organization for 24 years.
According to ESPN’s Malika Andrews, the Knicks have agreed to terms on a deal that’ll make Ewing a basketball ambassador for them.
Ewing, 62, rejoins a Knicks franchise at a time when the fanbase — amped over the prospect of having a contending club to root for — is highly engaged
Ewing will reportedly work closely with Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau.
“New York Knicks legend Patrick Ewing is returning to the franchise as a basketball ambassador,” Andrews said. “Ewing will be working directly with both head coach Tom Thibodeau and the front office.”
The timing of this announcement is quite interesting. The Knicks acquired Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves literally a week ago. Perhaps they’ll rely on Ewing to show him the ropes in New York City.
Even though it’s too early to tell how much of an impact Ewing will have on the Knicks, their fan base is applauding this move. They’re just glad he’s back where it all started.
The Knicks will begin their 2024-25 season on Oct. 22 against the Boston Celtics.
