Jalen Brunson could seemingly do no wrong while cementing his status as an NBA superstar last season. However, the New York Knicks guard confessed to making an awkward blunder.
On Thursday, Brunson revealed that he butt-dialed Tom Thibodeau “while having a conversation with the fellas.” It apparently wasn’t a chat he wanted his head coach to hear.
“Yeah it’s over yall,” Brunson wrote. “It’s been real.”
Based on how Brunson framed the post, he wasn’t discussing basketball strategy or his offseason workout plans.
The next question is whether he incriminated any of his Knicks teammates in the process. A tight-knit group welcomed yet another Villanova alum to the fold when New York acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets last month.
Either way, Thibodeau can probably overlook Brunson’s error following a career year.
Brunson finished fifth in the MVP voting after averaging 28.7 points and 6.7 points per game during the 2023-24 season. He upped the ante during the postseason, leading New York to a first-round win over the Philadelphia 76ers with 213 points in a six-game series.
The 27-year-old joined Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and LeBron James as the fifth player to score at least 40 points in four straight playoff games. However, Brunson suffered a broken hand in a second-round Game 7 loss to the Indiana Pacers.
Brunson has since returned to Madison Square Garden to confront Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton on an episode of WWE’s Friday Night SmackDown. Maybe he was hiding plans for a future wrestling match from Thibodeau before blowing his cover with the butt dial.
