Tom Brady was on the losing end of New York’s last major men’s team sports championship. The former quarterback thinks the New York Knicks are a contender to snap the city’s 12-year title drought.
Last weekend, Brady spoke with Knicks stars Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart in a live recording of their Roommates Show at Fanatics Fest. The 47-year-old, who won seven of 10 Super Bowl appearances, explained what it takes to claim the big one.
“To win the Super Bowl is just a whole other thing,” Brady said. It is probably like getting to the Finals. It is hard to get there, and then once you get there now, you really gotta compete.”
Hart interjected that they hadn’t experienced that feeling in the NBA, which led Brunson to reply “yet.” Brady provided them with some encouragement.
“I have a feeling you’re gonna get there,” Brady declared.
Of course, Brady could have just been playing a polite quest to his Knicks hosts and New York City crowd. But he wouldn’t be the only one to believe the Knicks are on the cusp of making some serious noise.
The Knicks won 50 games for the first season since 2012-13, shortly after Brady lost his second Super Bowl to the New York Giants. They defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in a tough first-round series before succumbing to injuries in a second-round loss to the Indiana Pacers.
New York responded by acquiring Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets this offseason. While the Knicks don’t know what it feels like to play in the NBA Finals, they now have four former teammates from Villanova’s national champions.
In order to validate Brady’s confidence, the Knicks may need to get through the Boston Celtics. The defending champions should remain the team to beat in the Eastern Conference next year, but the Knicks could emerge as one of their biggest obstacles to an NBA Finals return.
