For the past few months, multiple Brooklyn Nets players have popped up in trade rumors. Some of the team’s most popular trade candidates include Dennis Schroder, Dorian Finney-Smith, and Bojan Bogdanovic. However, per the latest reports, Brooklyn’s leading scorer Cam Thomas is “available” in trade talks (subscription required).
“Fourth-year gunner Cam Thomas (24.6 points per game) failed to come to terms on an extension and is widely considered to be available, but Brooklyn’s list of possibilities hardly ends there. They have proven vets like Dennis Schröder and Bojan Bogdanovicć, who has yet to play this season because of left foot surgery but is progressing toward a return.”

Determining the Likelihood of a Cam Thomas Trade
Thomas is in the final year of his rookie contract and will hit restricted free agency next year. However, beyond that, there is little reason for the Nets to move on from the Japanese native. Through 14 games, Thomas is enjoying a career year. So far, he is averaging 24.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists. Additionally, he is shooting 45.8% from the field and 39.2% from the three-point line. All of these numbers are career highs for the 23-year-old.
Furthermore, though he will technically be a free agent next offseason, there is no reason to believe Thomas is not a big part of Brooklyn’s future. He is constantly improving and is developing into an incredible player for the team. At this point, it is likely that the Nets are simply open to trade calls involving Thomas. However, it does not appear they are actively shopping him or even wanting to move on from him. While the Nets trading Thomas is not impossible, it is unlikely. Nonetheless, with the trade deadline still a few months away, the Nets are a team worth monitoring.
The Nets Season So Far
Coming into the year, many expected the Nets to be one of the worst teams in the league. Through 14 games, they are 5-9, 11th-best in the Eastern Conference. Despite their losing record, the Nets look solid on the court. After starting the season 4-4, they have come back down the Earth a bit. Still, they have the tools to surprise some people and potentially contend for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Before the season began, Thomas spoke to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto and said that he and the team are not treating this season like a rebuild.
“We’re not going to treat this as a rebuild as people say we’re doing. We’re going to go out there and compete and try to win every game. If we lose, we lose. We’re not going to throw games. We’re going to compete hard. It’s going to be entertaining and exciting with good, young Nets basketball. I can’t wait to see it,” Thomas said.
So far, it seems that Thomas meant what he said. There is still plenty of basketball left. However, the Nets are in a better position than many expected them to be, and they will be a fun team to watch as the season progresses.
