Nets’ Cam Thomas, still struggling with hamstring problems, missed last night’s game against the Lakers. However, despite contract issues, trade rumors, and injuries, on the court, Thomas has been impressive this season.
Cam Thomas Working On Being A Better Player
In 2021, the Nets selected Thomas as their 27th pick in the first round of the draft. He started coming off the bench while Kyrie Irving held the starting position. Irving mentored Thomas and continues to encourage his play.
Thomas has led the Nets in points per game for two straight seasons. Currently, he is averaging 23.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. Injuries frequently affect Thomas, and he needs to improve in assists.
Thomas Returns
Last week, Thomas returned to action in the Nets’ loss to the Trail Blazers. He had been out due to a left hamstring strain. Although the team lost, Coach Fernandez has confidence in Thomas and expects more from him.
Fernandez shared: “What I really like to buy his game tonight, it was the six assists to one turnover. He had more potential assists, hockey assists, that’s how we value for him, not just the assists, but the potential ones. I’m pretty sure if it gets close to 10 or over 10 is very good, that’s the CT we want to see.”
After Friday’s game against the Warriors, Thomas responded to the media about his passing: “I’ve been doing that, they’re (teammates) just making it. That’s how assists are. Pass it to them, my teammates got to make it. They’re making it so it goes on the stat sheet as an assist.”
Thomas feels his play has been the same all season. He added: “But, I’ve been doing the same thing, playing the same way all year. So, they’re just making the shots, and they’re going in as my assists.”
Cam Thomas Has Been Impressive
Thomas is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Despite his desire to stay, the Nets and Thomas failed to reach an extension before the season opener. His name has also come up in trade rumors throughout the season.
Despite the rumors and injuries, Cam Thomas has been impressive this season. Each time he steps on the court, he produces. His game is known for defense and shooting. Recently, he added passing to his resume and has been impressive with his assist stats. This improvement shows his desire to elevate his game. He also proves why the team should avoid pursuing Kevin Durant. Thomas has been a great force for the Nets since his NBA debut.
Remaining Games and The Future
The Nets’ current record is 22-42. With a month left of hoops, there are still many questions regarding the team’s future plans. In the upcoming draft, the team will land a lottery pick and has 31 draft picks over the next seven years. It appears that the Nets plan to build their team around younger talent. Leading the way are Nic Claxton, Cam Johnson, and Thomas.
In the upcoming weeks, fans and analysts will closely monitor Nets basketball. They will eagerly watch to see if the Nets go back to their losing ways to secure a lottery pick or defy the odds and push for the playoffs. No doubt, Thomas will continue to showcase why he deserves a place in the Nets’ future.
