This season, Cam Thomas is the Brooklyn Nets leading scorer. Unfortunately, just a few days ago, the team announced that a strained left hamstring would sideline him for the remainder of the season. Despite these setbacks, Cam Thomas’ future with the Nets will be determined this offseason as he becomes an unrestricted free agent. However, Thomas hopes to remain with the Nets.
Cam Thomas’s Future With The Nets
The Nets are the 12th seed in the Eastern Conference with a 23-45 record and are hoping for some lottery luck in the 2025 NBA Draft. However, they have not made it clear if they will re-sign Thomas. Drafted in 2021, Thomas continues to improve his game and has led the team in scoring for two consecutive seasons. He has averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, despite injuries limiting his availability this season.
Before the 2024-25 season, Thomas and the Nets failed to reach an agreement on a rookie scale extension. Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported that sources said Thomas could demand $20-22 million annually this summer. The Nets must decide whether to meet Thomas’ demands or let him test the market as a restricted free agent.
Thomas Hopes To Remain With The Nets
Thomas understands the upcoming negotiations are part of the business side of basketball. However, he hopes to remain with the Nets. On Sunday, he addressed questions regarding his potential free agency. He said,
“I was drafted here so I definitely have a connection here. I definitely want to be back by the end of the day, like I said, we just have to look into that, but whatever happens, happens. I’m just going to let my agents and the front office discuss that. It should be good; I would be very happy to be back if I am back.”
Decision To Be Made This Summer
This summer, the Nets will use their cap space to pursue free agents. It is unlikely that another team will outbid the Nets for Thomas, giving them a clear advantage. Nets general manager Sean Marks, who has been with the team since 2016, faces several key decisions over the next two weeks. As March Madness approaches, the team is actively watching Duke star Cooper Flagg. If the Nets secure the number one pick, they will focus on drafting Flagg. Pairing Flagg, a forward, with Thomas, a guard, could create one of the league’s most exciting duos.
Meanwhile, guard D’Angelo Russell, currently in his second stint with the franchise, recently expressed his desire to re-sign with the Nets. He told Brian Lewis, “I don’t think it’s in my control, to be honest,” and “I’ve been on the team before where everybody was free agents, too. So they’ve got the leverage, they’ve got the cards. If they decide to bring me back, cool. If not, we’ll figure it out.”
Thomas has excelled at scoring the ball. While management makes the final decision, Thomas acknowledges his valuable contributions. He stated, “When I got major minutes, I feel like I’ve been one of the best guards in the league in my position.” He added, “So, nothing really to talk about with that. But I feel like when I do have the minutes in a featured role, the sky’s the limit for me. We’ve seen that these past two years.”
Thomas is a fan favorite, and they hope the Nets will include him in their rebuilding plans. He has proven his value and wants to remain with the team.
