Six games in: Drew Timme now has six games of 20 or more points and three of 10 or more rebounds.
The Long Island Nets, the worst team in the G-League’s the Tip-Off Tournament, have already won more games in the regular season than they did in those first 16.
Long Island, playing their second game on their three-game road trip Tuesday night, beat the Grand Rapids Gold, 108-94. They’re now 3-4 with a chance to redeem themselves in the regular season after going 2-14 in the Tip-Off. From the beginning right up to the very end, this game was all Long Island,
The Nets won the game on the back of Drew Timme, the 6’10” Gonzaga product who finished with another double-double. In the six games since joining Long Island in a trade for Amari Bailey, Timme has been a force on the court and whether he’s grabbing rebounds or scoring points, he’s been providing in a big way for his new team.
Timme finished the game leading the team in scoring with 24 points. Timme has now scored more than 20 points in each of his six games with Long Island. Timme also continued to be a problem for opposing teams on the glass, picking up 13 rebounds to give him his third double-double.
Despite not getting off to a great start shooting the ball, Timme finished the game making 10 of his 17 shot attempts. In the six games since the trade, the three-time All-American has averaged 22.7 points and 10.7 boards, doubling his numbers with the Wisconsin Herd.
Killian Hayes also had an impressive showing. Hayes finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and nine assists. Hayes also picked up six steals tonight alone. The six steals led the team and created a lot of additional points for Long Island to put this game away for good.
Aside from Timme and Hayes, Tyson Etienne continued to shine. He picked up 22 points, second on the team, and had seven assists. Kendall Brown continued his solid play of late, once again filling the boxscore with 15 points as well as six rebounds, six assists and two steals while shooting 6-of-11.
Trevon Scott, the 6’8” 28-year-old who’s another recent addition, had a quite respectable performance as well with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks.
All of the Long Island starters continued to pull their weight as all of them scored in double-digits. Long Island head coach Mfon Udofia continued to stick with his starters for a majority of the game and of late has been going to his bench very rarely. In fact, Long Island’s bench finished with just 16 combined points from Terry Roberts, Jordan Minor, and KJ Jones II.
The first quarter was headlined by Scott and Hayes who picked up nine and eight points respectively. This combined 17 points helped propel Long Island to their 33-26 lead entering the second quarter. Long Island pulled away in the second, taking a 12-point lead into the half.
By the time the third quarter came around, Long Island had maintained, then slightly grew their lead. Long Island led 79-63 heading into the fourth and final quarter of play. Long Island put the final dagger in the game in the fourth, which has been troublesome recently, ultimately winning by 14 points.
Nuggets two-Way player PJ Hall recorded his seventh straight double-double for the Gold with 30 points, 18 rebounds and six assists. Tevian Jones was also a big scorer tonight with 14 points, six rebounds and two assists.
