Brooklyn Nets guard Dennis Schroder has been doing quite the feat for Germany as he has led them to the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Germany’s matchup on Tuesday against Greece had enough star power on both sides to make the event fantastic, but there was another person attending the game to heighten the celebrity status for Germany.
FIBA posted on X a picture of former Dallas Mavericks superstar and German legend Dirk Nowitzki in attendance for Germany’s 76-63 win over Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece. Germany had quite the performance in front of one of their most-celebrated countryman as they held Greece to just 63 points and made it to the final four of the Olympics for the first time in the program’s history.
Despite trailing by as many as 12 points in the contest, Schroder and company managed to straighten themselves up by playing tougher defense on Greece in the paint and getting some of their stars going on the offensive end as well. Schroder had 13 points and eight assists (with just one turnover) while Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner dropped 18 points and three rebounds.
In his own right, Nowitzki did a lot for the German National Team during his time as a player as he led Germany to a bronze medal in the 2002 FIBA World Championship and a silver medal in the 2005 FIBA Eurobasket. As Germany continues on its quest for the gold medal, they will most likely have people like Nowitzki in attendance to witness the country attempt to achieve something special.
