The Nets trade saga is one of the most-talked about topics around the NBA. As the February 6 trade deadline approaches, rumors regarding Nets’ forward Cam Johnson are heightening. While the Nets don’t seem to be in a rush to trade him, there are rumors that Cam Johnson is on the Spurs’ radar.
Nets Forward Receiving High Interest From The Spurs
Cam Johnson On Radar For Spurs
The Nets are having a terrible season this year. They have a 15-33 record, placing them 13th in the Eastern Conference. In December, they traded former players Dennis Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith to teams in the Western Conference.
In 2023, the Nets acquired Johnson in the Kevin Durant blockbuster trade that sent the future Hall of Famer to Phoenix. Johnson is under contract through the 2026-27 season. Despite some injuries, Johnson, 28, is having a good season. He averages 19.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
Johnson would be an asset to a contending team. However, he previously shared with HoopsHype.com his desire to remain with the Nets.
“I want to build this.” he said, “I like coach Jordi. I like our staff…I think we’re heading in the right direction here. I can’t tell them exactly what to do and how to proceed moving forward. The business will do what the business does. But for me, I’m invested in what we have here.”
In recent weeks, trade talks regarding Johnson have drawn significant interest from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Orlando Magic, among others. The Spurs are the latest team to emerge as a potential trade destination for Johnson.
Johnson Is On The Spurs Radar
The Spurs have made headlines in the past few days as the favorites to acquire Sacramento Kings’ guard De’Aaron Fox and are now also focusing on possibly acquiring Johnson. They currently hold a 20-24 record, placing them 12th in the Western Conference.
San Antonio may be one of Fox’s preferred destinations. Adding Fox and Johnson to play alongside center Victor Wembanyama would give the Spurs a shot at the playoffs. Having a coach like Gregg Popovich, who is currently recovering from a stroke, will help make Johnson a dominant player.
Nets Asking Price for Johnson
The Nets are seeking two first-round picks from any NBA team in exchange for Johnson. They currently hold 31 draft picks over the next seven years and aim to acquire more. In the 2025 NBA Draft, the Nets will have four first-round picks, the most of any team in this draft class.
The Spurs, along with many other teams, are in a position to trade for Johnson. However, San Antonio might be one of the better fits for him. The trade deadline market for powerhouse teams has weakened over the past couple of seasons due to off-season salary mismanagement and trading away of picks. Now, it is time for non-powerhouse organizations to showcase what they can offer and which players they can trade. Johnson’s time with the Nets may be coming to an end. However, he could restart his career and play alongside key players who could help him return to the NBA Finals.
What’s Next?
With only a week left until the deadline, the Nets need to finalize their summer plans. Ultimately, this decision will determine whether Johnson remains on the team. However, the Nets are involved in dark horse rumors as well for players like Fox.
