Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez had a chance to continue Canada’s run in the 2024 Paris Olympics to get to the semifinals where they would have the opportunity to win a medal. However, despite the fact that the Canadians were one of the deepest teams in the overall field, they could not keep the good times rolling.
On Tuesday, Fernandez and Canada lost to France 82-73 in the quarterfinals, meaning that the Canadians no longer have the chance to compete for a medal despite how well they played up to this point. France led by as many as 19 points in the contest, a cushion that Canada was able to whittle down to just a five-point deficit, but it looked like they were too tired to complete the comeback in the end.
Oklahoma City superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander gave a valiant effort as he put up 27 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Toronto Raptors forward RJ Barrett dropped 16 points and three rebounds. France had some big performances from their side as well as forward Guerschon Yabusele put up 22 points and Isaia Cordinier dropped 20 points and three rebounds.
Despite Gilgeous-Alexander putting the Canadian team on his back, the team was unable to overcome France’s size in the paint, even with Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert playing just three minutes in the contest. France will go on to face Nets guard Dennis Schroder and Germany in the semifinals on Wednesday.
After being down by as many as 19 points in the game, Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez and Canada unfortunately lost to France 82-73. Canada made things interesting in the second half, but France had too much of a cushion. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put up 27 points and 5 rebounds.
