Brooklyn Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez has been juggling two jobs during this summer as he did his job as the leader of the Nets along with trying to help Canada win the gold medal. As Canada progresses through the 2024 Paris Olympics, Fernandez and company can be proud knowing that they will be playing for something soon.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on Saturday that Canada will be playing France in the quarterfinals on Tuesday in their pursuit of the gold medal. So far, Fernandez has led Canada to a 3-0 record thanks to his coaching prowess and the level of talent that he has on the team for the tournament.
To this point, Fernandez and Canada have defeated Greece, Australia, and Spain on their way to being one of the best teams in the field. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been leading the way for Canada by averaging 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting 58.1% from the field and 37.5% from three-point land.
Fernandez has been fortunate to be able to rely on players like Gilgeous-Alexander along with Toronto Raptors forward RJ Barrett, someone who is averaging 21.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per contest while shooting 59.5% from the floor and 45.5% from deep. Despite being just 2-6 against France, Canada is heading into the quarterfinals with a 3-0 record and should be set up to beat France to advance to the semifinals.
