The Brooklyn Nets made one of the biggest moves this offseason once they traded Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks for as many as five first-round picks and three players last month. From that point on, Brooklyn has been more concerned with acquiring young players and draft picks, but they also spent some money this summer.
Bobby Marks and Tim Bontemps of ESPN recently reported that the NBA as a whole spent $2.7 billion in free-agency this summer and that figure is over $600 million more than what the league spent in free-agency last summer. While the Nets did not necessarily sign any big-name free-agents given their direction, they did spend the money that needed to be spent.
Per Spotrac, the Nets spent $113.4 million this offseason and that ranks 11th in the NBA this summer with the clear leader this season being the Philadelphia 76ers that spent over $506 million in free-agency. When it comes to tracking what teams spent in free-agency this summer, it’s important to know that the number is for the total monetary value of the contracts that were signed.
For example, Brooklyn’s biggest free-agent deal this offseason was re-signing center Nic Claxton to a four-year, $97 million contract, meaning that he accounted for 85.5% of the money that the Nets spent on free-agents this summer.
The other free-agency moves were Brooklyn signing guard Shake Milton to a three-year, $9.16 million contract as part of a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks to make the Bridges trade work, forward Trendon Watford signing his one-year, $2.73 million qualifying offer, and signing guard Keon Johnson to a two-year, $4.51 million deal.
