After 30 years at the helm, longtime Harvard head football coach Tim Murphy announced his retirement. But today, the Crimson selected their new head coach – prying him from the Big Ten Conference in the process.
According to The Harvard Crimson, Harvard are hiring Rutgers tight ends coach Andrew Aurich as their new head coach. Per the report, the school chose Aurich over Harvard defensive coordinator Scott Larkee and quarterbacks coach Joel Lamb – both Harvard graduates.
“Andrew Aurich, a tight ends coach at Rutgers University, will serve as the next head coach of Harvard’s football team, according to a person with knowledge of the decision,” authors Jo Lemann and Tyler Ory reported.
But that isn’t to say that Aurich doesn’t have Ivy League coaching experience. Prior to joining Rutgers in 2020, Aurich served as associate head coach at his alma mater Princeton.
That said, Aurich’s hire marks a rarity for Harvard as the Crimson have not hired a coach without prior head coaching experience at any level since the 1940s.

Andrew Aurich is going to have big shoes to fill at Harvard. In his 30 years at the helm, Tim Murphy led Harvard to 10 Ivy League conference titles, 21 winning seasons, three undefeated seasons, and six seasons where they went unbeaten in their conference.
Will Aurich be able to lead the Crimson to a winning record in his first season?
