Today’s game between Virginia Tech and Rutgers has been an interesting one to say the least. But if Virginia Tech lose this game at home, they’re probably going to look back on one rather embarrassing play in the second quarter as a big reason why.
With 2:21 remaining in the second quarter, Rutgers led 14-7 while Virginia Tech has the ball at their own five-yard line. Hokies QB Kyron Drones took the snap from the shotgun formation but Rutgers’ defenders quickly pushed the offensive linemen backwards. Virginia Tech’s right tackle got pushed right into Drones’ path as he tried to move to his right, knocking him to the ground, but as he fell onto the ground he tried to throw the ball away – only to throw it backwards into the stands for a safety. The score became 16-7, Rutgers and the Scarlet Knights got the ball back.
Fortunately for the Hokies, Rutgers were unable to add any more points before halftime but it was little comfort for them as the Scarlet Knights scored an opening drive touchdown in the third quarter.
Fans have been making jokes about the safety for the better part of an hour though:

“Ah, I see the problem: you’re supposed to throw the ball the other direction,” one user joked.
“I am begging for someone to put cartoon sound effects over this,” wrote another.
“Should have been three points for a reverse field goal,” a third joked.
That certainly won’t be on the Senior Day highlight reel for Drones.
