Dunlap has three more years of eligibility after taking a medical redshirt for his injury-shortened sophomore season
Another fan favorite is departing the Red Storm.
St. John’s sophomore forward Brady Dunlap is entering the transfer portal. On3’s Joe Tipton first reported the news on Monday afternoon.
Dunlap is the second Red Storm player to enter the transfer portal, joining Big East Player of the Year RJ Luis Jr., who officially entered the portal last Saturday.
Originally committed to play for head coach Mike Brey at Notre Dame as a top-150 recruit out of high school, Dunlap opted out of his national letter of intent after Brey’s retirement and became one of Rick Pitino’s first signings ahead of the Hall of Fame head coach’s first season in Queens in 2023.
The Los Angeles native was projected as a sharp-shooting wing and played sparingly in his first year, averaging 3.2 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting 38% from the field and 30.6% from three while only making four starts in 25 games.
Dunlap continued to come off the bench in his sophomore year and appeared to finally find confidence shooting the rock, hitting 46.5% from the floor and 37.5% from three through his first ten games played this past season. However, a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and an abdominal tear ended his season. If there was any consolation for Dunlap, he met the maximum cut-off of ten games played this season and earned a medical redshirt, granting the forward three more seasons of eligibility.
Even though he was knocked out of commission, Dunlap still left an impact when he was off the court by becoming the Red Storm’s hype man on the bench. In the first half of St. John’s’ matchup versus Omaha in this year’s NCAA Tournament, Dunlap went viral for doing a sniper celebration after Simeon Wilcher drained a three-pointer.

St. John’s quickly filled Dunlap’s spot on the next season’s roster by landing Providence forward Bryce Hopkins, leaving three open scholarship spots for the 2025-26 season. The Red Storm are targeting Georgia transfer Silas Demary Jr. to fill one of those vacancies and hosted the sophomore guard on a campus visit on Monday.
