
Luis Jr. was among 30 players in the nation named to the team while averaging 17.4 points and 6.9 rebounds in his junior season
R.J. Luis Jr. is receiving more recognition midway through the season. The Red Storm’s star swingman was named to the Naismith Player of the Year midseason team on Friday afternoon.
Luis was one of 30 players named across the country and one of only five Big East players (Eric Dixon, Kam Jones, Ryan Kalkbrenner, and Alex Karaban) to make the list.

After dealing with injury problems in his first season at St. John’s, R.J. Luis has broken out this season. Luis leads the team with 17.4 points per game, fourth-best in the Big East, and has recorded a 20-point performance on seven occasions. The 6-foot-7 wing from Miami, Florida, also averages 6.9 rebounds per game, sixth best in the Big East.
Luis and the Johnnies will return to action on Sunday, February 16, when they face the No. 24 Creighton Bluejays at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on FS1.
