According to Jon Rothstein, the Red Storm will face the Scarlet Knights in another preseason exhibition, this time in the Garden State
Before the start of last season, St. John’s and Rutgers faced each other in an enthralling exhibition at Carnesecca Arena that featured a 21-point comeback by the Scarlet Knights to force overtime, a buzzer-beating triple by Nahiem Alleyne to force another overtime stanza and an exciting end-of-game rally by the Red Storm in an 89-78 win over their former Big East rival.
Both fanbases might be disappointed in no news of a subsequent regular season matchup, but they will be granted a preseason rematch this fall.
According to CBS Sports reporter Jon Rothstein, St. John’s will face Rutgers in a second charity exhibition in as many years this October. Brian Fonseca of NJ.com also reports that the game will be held at Jersey Mike’s Arena on the campus of Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
While it may be impossible to live up to the excitement of last year’s game, there is plenty of intrigue for this October’s matchup. Rutgers enters this season with the fourth-best high school recruiting class per 247Sports.com’s rankings, led by consensus second and third-ranked recruits Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper.
Incoming star transfer Kadary Richmond will face Rutgers for a fifth straight season and will look to break through an iron-clad Scarlet Knights defense that has stymied him in the past. Richmond has a career record of 2-2 against the Scarlet Knights, averaged 10.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on 39.5% shooting and 16.7% from three across stints with Syracuse and Seton Hall.
