Six different Red Storm players scored in double-figures to beat the Blue Hens, 97-76
St. John’s finished their non-conference season with a not overly impressive but satisfactory 97-76 victory over Delaware on Saturday night.
Even though Delaware senior forward John Camden had a career day, putting up 35 points on 13-of-18 shooting and 9-of-11 from three, his scoring outburst did not threaten the Red Storm.
Delaware took an early 8-7 lead before St. John’s snatched the game away for good with an 18-4 run with 11:08 left in the first half. The Red Storm never led by less than double digits from that point.
St. John’s did not need a herculean effort by any player to win comfortably over a mid-major opponent like the Blue Hens, getting balanced production from multiple players. A season-high six players scored in double-figures, including Vince Iwuchukwu with an 11-point performance off the bench, which marks his first double-figure scoring game as a Johnny.
Saturday’s game was also the Red Storm’s most efficient of the season. St. John’s shot 60.9% from the field and 66.7% from three (8-of-12); both are bests in a game this year. For comparison, the Red Storm shot 21.4% from three (6-of-28) over their last two games. St. John’s also dished out a season-high 23 assists on 39 made baskets, helping the offense hum along.
Deivon Smith had the best game of his graduate year so far, posting 20 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists and flashing his explosive athleticism again.
