This non-conference slate features two high-major games: a first-time visit to Happy Valley against Penn State on Monday, December 2, and a home game against Wake Forest on Sunday, December 8. Last season, the Nittany Lions enjoyed a successful 22-13 (9-9 Big Ten) season and made the semifinals for the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT). The 2023-24 season wasn’t so hot for Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons look to bounce back from a dismal 7-25 (2-16 ACC) campaign.
There is only one non-conference foe who made last season’s NCAA tournament: Fairfield, who the Red Storm will face at home on Sunday, December 15.
Led by third-year head coach Carly Thibault-Dudonis, the Stags are coming off their most outstanding season. Fairfield finished with a 31-2 record (which includes a perfect 20-0 conference mark), embarked on a 25-game winning streak, appeared in the AP Poll rankings for the first time in program history, and secured an auto-bid into the 2024 NCAA tournament. Ultimately, the Stags fell in the first round of the NCAA tournament to 4-seed Indiana.
After reaching the NCAA tournament and winning their first game in the Big Dance in ten years in 2023, St. John’s missed the cut for the tournament last season, finishing with an 18-15 record (7-11 in Big East). However, the Red Storm made the WBIT, trouncing Florida by a score of 79-60 in the first round before falling to Toledo, 72-71, in the second round.
Head coach Joe Tartamella’s team lost integral fifth-year players Unique Drake and Jillian Archer but returns former UMass transfer and point guard Ber’Nyah Mayo for her final season of college ball after averaging 10.9 points and 3.5 assists last season.
