Syracuse linebacker Marlowe Wax has earned Atlantic Coast Conference Linebacker of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday. The award comes after he recorded nine tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in Syracuse’s 38-31 overtime win over Virginia Tech.
In his first game back at the JMA Wireless Dome since suffering a right-leg injury in the season-opener versus Ohio, Wax clinched the game in overtime with a forced fumble. As Hokies’ quarterback Collin Schlee scampered down the left side, Wax wrapped him up and punched the ball out to secure the win.
Earlier in the contest, Wax teamed up with interior tackle David Omopariola to take down Schlee for a big loss. A few plays later, Wax recorded a sack of his own. At the end of the third quarter, Duce Chestnut emerged from his safety position and forced running back Jeremiah Coney to fumble. Wax jumped on the ball, and the Orange took their first lead of the game on the following drive.
Wax’s big performance was just his third game of the season. He missed five games before returning against then-No. 19 Pitt, but he only recorded two tackles in SU’s loss to the Panthers.
He’s Syracuse’s ninth player to earn ACC weekly honors in 2024. Wax first earned the honor after his Week 1 performance while Kyle McCord and left tackle Da’Metrius Weatherspoon won weekly awards after SU’s Week 2 win over then-No. 23 Georgia Tech.
Jackson Meeks was named the conference’s Wide Receiver of the Week following a big day versus Holy Cross. Running back LeQuint Allen Jr. and edge rusher Fadil Diggs earned honors after SU’s overtime win over UNLV. Meeks and Justin Barron then received the award after their performances against NC State.
