Syracuse defensive back Marcellus Barnes Jr. will likely miss the remainder of the season, head coach Fran Brown said on ESPN Syracuse.
“I don’t think Marcellus Barnes Jr. will play anymore this season,” Brown said.
Barnes Jr., a true freshman, was a four-star recruit who committed to the Orange on Jan. 6, 2024. He was previously committed to Virginia Tech but decommitted on Nov. 19, 2023.
Throughout his first year at SU, Barnes Jr. emerged as one of its top cornerbacks but has dealt with numerous injuries. After playing in 30 and 33 snaps, respectively, in Syracuse’s first two games according to Pro Football Focus, Barnes Jr. only notched six snaps against Stanford. He proceeded to miss SU’s next three games.
Following the Orange’s second bye week, Barnes Jr. returned to action against Pittsburgh before playing a season-high 47 snaps last week versus Virginia Tech. But now, it appears Barnes Jr. will miss the remainder of the season. According to PFF, Barnes Jr. only allowed three receptions for 37 yards.
