Syracuse football: Fran Brown offers to take on Deion Sanders in Colorado Spring Game

What would’ve been a great Bowl matchup could happen this spring

If you’ve been following along with Syracuse Orange football, you know their traditional Spring Game is scheduled for April 12th inside the Dome.

Now, there’s the possibility of them adding a second Spring Game… against another DI program. And not just any program… one lead by a coach who’s brought just as much flair to his team as Fran Brown has to the Orange.

The Colorado Buffaloes and Deion Sanders are searching for an opponent to face for their spring exhibition, as opposed to a normal scrimmage. Coach Fran answered the call on Twitter/X, saying he and SU are up to the challenge:

SU currently has its final two spring practices scheduled for Tuesday, April 15th and Wednesday, April 16th. For this move to work, they would have to reschedule those two practices – or any pair of the maximum 15 scheduled over the next month – to open up slots to use in Boulder.

This would be a unique opportunity for the program and Brown, who brought SU back to the national stage last year with a 9-3 regular season, wins over ranked Georgia Tech, UNLV, and Miami, and a Holiday Bowl victory over Washington State. The Orange finished No. 20 in the final AP Poll.

Still, replicating that success this year will be difficult. Their roster is much younger, and the schedule is absolutely brutal. Maintaining national interest will take some work – and while their own Spring Game will not be televised, Coach Prime’s will be featured on ESPN2.

This event would also add to Fran’s mentality as a no-excuses coach. Unlike many of his peers, who have canceled or modified their spring camps to extremely limit access and general viewership, Brown is one of few going the opposite direction.

Fran and Deion both have a history of packing their spring events as well. Orange practices were stuffed last year, and the subsequent Dome crowd had to be a spring football record. Prime has drawn crowds of 47- and 28- thousand, respectively, to his two spring games.

There’s still details to work out – the largest of which is getting permission from the NCAA, which prohibits joint practices – but the potential for “biggest spring football event of the year” has to be enticing for all parties involved. Imagine saying that with SU involved just two short years ago.
