After a scoreless first period where both goalies faced double-digit shots, Syracuse struck first on a goal by Heidi Knoll just 1:29 into the second period. The score stayed that way into the third when RMU tied it at 1-1 on a goal from Jersey Phillips 1:35 into the final period. The Colonials jumped ahead when Morgan Giannone scored at 11:50 of the third.
Syracuse was scrambling to keep their season alive and got the tying goal from graduate student Bryn Saarela on the power play with four minutes to play. Neither team was able to get the game-winner in the first overtime and Thompson was able to net the game-winner at 2:01 of the second overtime, converting on Syracuse’s first shot on goal in the 2nd OT.
Allie Kelley made 40 saves on the game, six in overtime and Syracuse will need her strong play in the next round. The win moves the Orange into the AHA semifinals against the Mercyhurst Lakers, who they split with last weekend.
The best-of-3 series begins next Friday afternoon at 3:00.
