And another sport gets ready to kick off their season
The Syracuse Orange athletics season is in full swing so we are back with these weekly recaps as we look to broaden our coverage of the Olympic sports.
Field Hockey (5-2, 0-1)
The Orange struggled in their ACC opener falling 5-0 to North Carolina on Friday. Syracuse was able to bounce back on Sunday and defeat Longwood 4-0 behind goals from Bo vanKempen, Vivian Rowan, Lieke Leeggangers, and Hattie Madden.
Syracuse travels to play Wake Forest and Duke next weekend.
Women’s Soccer (6-5-1, 0-4)
After a 5-1 defeat at #2 Florida State, the Orange returned home to host North Carolina on Sunday. Syracuse battled the #8 Tar Heels but dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to the perennial national power.
The Orange will host Wake Forest next Sunday as they look for their first ACC points.
Volleyball (12-0, 0-0)
Syracuse returned home and swept the Salt City Invitational by defeating LeMoyne, Iowa State and Cornell. The Orange held on to beat Iowa State in five sets on Saturday in their closest contest this season.
Graduate student Ava Palm was named the Tournament MVP after collecting 16 kills in each of the final two matches. Palm was joined on the All-Tournament team by Anastasiia Nikolnikova and Sydney Moore.
The Orange finish their non-conference scheduled undefeated for the first time since 2010 and now the team will hit the road to face North Carolina and Duke to open ACC play.
Cross-Country
The Orange were off but both teams moved up in the rankings after their performance at Penn State. The men are up three spots to 19th while the women moved up one spot to 28th. Both teams will be in action Friday at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational.
Ice Hockey (0-0, 0-0)
Syracuse won their only exhibition game 6-0 over the University of Windsor. The Orange open the regular season at Minnesota-Duluth next weekend while we once again ask Syracuse to sell these sweaters.
