Syracuse Olympic Sports Update: Rough weekend for the Orange

The Syracuse Orange athletics season is in full swing so we are back with these weekly recaps as we look to broaden our coverage of the Olympic sports.

Field Hockey (6-3, 1-2)

Syracuse split their weekend games- winning 1-0 at Wake Forest on Friday before dropping a 1-0 shootout loss to Duke on Sunday.

Bo van Kempen’s goal was the difference in the win over Wake. The Orange will host Louisville and Princeton next weekend in two key games for their post-season hopes. There’s a lot of games left but the Orange need some quality wins for the resume.

Women’s Soccer (6-6-1, 0-5)

It’s been tough going for the Orange in the deepest conference in the country. Syracuse dropped a 3-0 decision to #5 Wake Forest. Shea Vanderbosch made 8 saves in the contest, raising her ACC-leading season total to 58.

Syracuse will host Notre Dame next Saturday.

Volleyball (12-2, 0-2)

The winning streak ended with losses to North Carolina (3-0) and Duke (3-1). Now the Orange have to quickly regroup because next week #23 SMU and #1 Pittsburgh come to Syracuse.

The match with the Panthers is an 11 am start next Sunday and should draw a big crowd to the Women’s Building

Cross-Country

The Orange squads both finished 12th at the Nuttycombe Invitational, but the result likely feels better for the women who knocked off several teams ranked ahead of them in the polls. Savannah Roark led the women with a 22nd place finish and freshman Jayden Harberts closed strong to finish 60th.

Syracuse’s men were led by Assaf Harari (34th) and Sam Lawler (47th). The Orange weren’t far from finishing in the top 10, but they are going to need to get their 3-4-5 runners closer to the top two moving forward.

Syracuse will be at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh next weekend.

Ice Hockey (0-0, 0-0)

The Orange were scheduled to play Minnesota-Duluth but the series was moved to January. Next weekend’s home games against Stonehill will kick off the 24-25 campaign.
